Rules & Regulations
Admission to Jadavpur University, though extremely competitive, is through a completely transparent and student-friendly process, from application to publication of admission test results; details are available to anyone who inquires. The process is reviewed annually and improvements implemented (e.g. making applications to all courses at the Faculty of Arts online) on a regular basis. Students from backward and disadvantaged sections of society, especially those from remote rural areas, are encouraged to apply and there are many schemes and programmes for such students.
All new students are made aware of the university's origins (as the patriotic and anti-imperial National Council of Education, Bengal, in the early 20th century), its heritage, mission and vision. They are briefed about facilities available for them (e.g. library and medical facilities, counselling services, special services for differently-abled students); the university's zero-tolerance policy with regard to ragging and sexual harassment, among others. All students are expected to abide by the values that Jadavpur University stands for, including devotion to the truth, the practice of virtue, selflessness and duty to others, and to take these as the guiding principles of their lives.
Students are encouraged to take an active part in curriculum development, not only through their formal feedback on teachers, course content and infrastructural facilities, but also through debate and discussion at the department-specific student-teacher committees; student representatives at various statutory bodies are provided a platform to make the student community's views known and to contribute to planning for the future.
Student Enrolment and Profile
Admission announcements are made in major newspapers; media houses also announce Jadavpur University's admission dates/policies. Jadavpur University ensures transparency at all stages of the admission process, from applications and the conducting of admission tests to the publication of results by making details available to anyone who wants to know them. No complaints regarding lack of transparency have been received from candidates so far.
Process of Admission
UG Admission
- Admission to undergraduate programmes in the FET is through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination, conducted by an independent body, followed by counselling.
- For admission to the undergraduate programmes in the Faculty of Arts, a combination of merit (i.e. results at the +2 level) and entrance test is used. Departments have autonomy to decide upon admission criteria.
- In the Faculty of Science, admission at the undergraduate level is based on merit.
PG Admission
- In the FET, GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) results and scholarships become important for admission; in addition, students sponsored by industry as well as self-sponsored students are admitted. For GATE applicants, their GATE score is given a 70% weightage, while for the others their BE or BTech scores receive 50% weightage; the balance percentage is determined through tests, with 10% weightage being given to experience in industry for students sponsored by industry.
- In the Faculty of Science, admission to postgraduate programmes is on the basis of merit (BSc results) with entrance test, conducted by individual departments.
- In the Faculty of Arts, the BA (Honours) results and admission tests conducted by individual departments determine admission.

Equal Opportunity Cell
One of the foundational objectives of Jadavpur University was to help those less fortunate than one; this still forms part of the oath that all students who graduate from Jadavpur University have to pledge. In keeping with this tradition and in order to foster a spirit of inclusivity in the realm of higher education, one of the "best practice" that has been selected for emphasis is providing critical support and equal opportunities to differently-abled individuals. Jadavpur University has already done much for integrating such differently-abled students into the mainstream of education within the university (e.g. creating a library of Talking Books; constructing ramps in all buildings), although much still remains to be done.

Examination
There is a cell for redressal of grievances with reference to examinations in the Examination Section headed by the Controller of Examinations, Jadavpur University. All grievances are responded to by the Controller of Examinations and by the Assistant Controller of Examinations by meeting personally with students. As mentioned earlier, there is provision for review of examination-scripts as also for students to see their answer-scripts under RTI.
Student Grievance
Jadavpur University does not have a centrally-administered cell to redress students grievance. However, the departmental Student-Teacher committees provide an easily accessible forum for the rapid redress of students grievances at the (departmental) academic level; for grievances related to university examinations, students can approach the Controller of Examinations or, if that fails, ask to see their answer scripts under the RTI Act. For grievances regarding other issues, there are other bodies, including the Foreign Students Cell for international students, the Anti-Ragging Committee, the Committee for Gender Awareness and Action Against Sexual Harassment. The Centre for Counselling Services and Studies in Self-Development is active and made frequent use of by students.
Other Amenities
Student's Cheap Stores
Thereis another book store just behind Sri Aurobindo Building which is supervised by the Engineering Students Union. This wayside store is a boon to commuter students who may need a last minute purchase of notebooks etc., while rushing for classes.

Consortium for Educational
Communication (CEC-UGC)
Sports Board
To trace the history of Jadavpur University is to trace a part of India’s freedom movement, at least from the Swadeshi Movement onwards. It was 1905 -1906 Bengal stood divided. The times were feverish.
The hegemony of the British establishment had to be challenged. Education had to play a new role in this changed scenario. It had to become a new form of resistance through which the emergent nationalist spirit could be propagated. With this in mind the National Council of Education (NCE) came into being.
Its primary aim was to impart education - literary, scientific and technical on national lines exclusively under national control. To achieve self-reliance, through education. The foundation of the NCE was made possible by the munificence - scholarly as well as monetary - of the likes of Raja Subodh Chandra Mallik , Brajendra Kishore Roychowdhury of Gouripur as well as Sir Rash Behari Ghosh (first President of NCE), poet Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Aurobindo Ghosh.
In 1910 the Society for the Promotion of Technical Education in Bengal which looked after Bengal Technical Institute (which later became College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal) was amalgamated to NCE. NCE henceforth looked after the College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal which by 1940 was virtually functioning as a University. After Independence, the Government of West Bengal, with the concurrence of the Govt. of India, enacted the necessary legislation to establish Jadavpur University on the 24th of December 1955.
Now Jadavpur University has successfully established itself as a foremost Indian University with a vast repertoire of courses offered, an enviable list of faculty members and has come to be known for its commitment towards advanced study and research.
Aims & Objectives
Founding members of National Council of Bengal, the parent body of the Jadavpur University, in 1906 set the goal "To achieve self reliance through empowerment of Youth by imparting Best of Global Knowledge".
Today the University also aims :
- To promote and pursue higher education by linking up traditionally separated subjects in the light of the ever-changing global scenario.
- To explore new dimensions of academic administration free of bureaucratic impediments.
- To set up a role model for academic leadership.
Future Plans
- Strengthening of existing departments catering to postgraduate studies and advanced level research.
- Introduction of new courses in Emerging and Frontier areas of study.
- Improvement of Teaching and Learning process with modern electronics and multimedia aids.
- Trans disciplinary research and development through schools and centres.
- Functioning as a nodal centre for academic and technical human resource development.
- Augmenting infrastructure facilities to match latest trends.
- Academic and admin1istrative reforms and office automation.
- Setting up platforms for close interaction with industries, National R&D Laboratories and neighboring institutions.
- Providing further quantum boosts to existing amenities, equipments and facilities by arranging funds from various funding agencies.
