Postgraduate Admission Test Guideline for the academic session 2015-2016
General Guidelines :
- Answers for all written tests, other than those for Bengali & Hindi, will have to be written in English.
- All papers will be of 2 hours’ duration.
- Non-programmable calculators will be allowed. No mobile phones or tabs will be allowed.
- For tests or parts of tests with multiple-choice questions, there will be four options for answers for each such question. Answers will have to be provided by filling in the correct option on an OMR sheet. Incorrect answers for MCQs will incur negative marks, with a value amounting to one-third of the full marks of the corresponding question being deducted.

Bengali | Mixed : MCQ (30 x 1 mark), Written : Analysis of picture (20 marks), analysis of poem (20 marks), Essay (40 marks). |
English | Mixed : Part 1 will consist of 20 MCQs. There will be negative marking. Part 1 is only a qualifying test; marks obtained will not be carried over to Part 2. Part 2 will consist of one essay (50 marks) and two questions on an unseen poem (25 + 25 marks). The Part 2 section of the scripts of only those candidates who qualify in Part 1 will be examined. |
Hindi | Written : pieces including appreciation of a poem; descriptive short essays. |
History | Written : two groups with essay-type questions. Group A will have an excerpt followed by questions. Group B will have individual options. |
Philosophy | MCQ : 50 questions of 2 marks each. |
Political Science | Written. Essay : 40 marks, Picture Analysis: 20 marks. Short Notes (8 x 5 marks each): 40 marks |
Sociology | Written : 4 questions out of which a candidate has to answer any 2. The test will be based on undergraduate knowledge of the discipline. |
Biological Sciences | MCQ : from the following common branches of Biology and will cover the Honours undergraduate syllabus of Botany, Zoology and Human Physiology, namely Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Instrumentation, Ecology and Environmental Biology. |
Chemistry | MCQ : 50 questions of 2 marks each. |
Applied Economics | MCQ : 50 questions of 2 marks each. |
Geography | Mixed : Group A: 40 MCQ. Group B: Written-Nine questions. |
Applied Geology | MCQ : 80 questions |
Mathematics | Written Test : 20 questions of 5 marks each |
Physics | MCQ : 25 questions, 4 marks each |
Statistics | Written test : 10 questions. Random variables and probability distributions, sampling distributions, multivariate analysis, theory of estimation, parametric and non-parametric methods of testing, large sample theory, ANOVA and design of experiments, regression analysis, sample survey. |
