College History | |
Chandernagore college is located on the artistically designed strand that extends along the west bank of the river Bhagirathi at Chandernagore. An amalgamation of cultures, French and Indian, the college today represent the best of both worlds. While offering Courses in three different streams- Science, Commerce and Humanities, the college tries to present a view of education that is holistic and equipped to meet the demands of intelligent and inquisitive young minds.
The origins of Chandernagore College can be traced back to a French Primary School, the “Ecole de Sainte Marie”, established in 1862 by Father subsequently introduced. On December 15, 1887 The French Government took over control of the institute for the Jesuit Missionaries, renaming it “Ecole Publique des Garcons”. In 1891 the FA course of the University of Calcutta was introduced and in 1901 its name was changed once again to “College Dupleix”. The partition of Bengal in 1905 had its impact upon Chandernagore and the city was soon in the throes of the Swadeshi movement. The subdirector (Vice-Principle) of the college, Sir Charu Chandra Roy and several students were involved in revolved in revolutionary activities. Sir Roy was arrested and the College was closed down in 1908. however, the charges against Sir Roy could not be substantiated and he was released he then organized a movement for the restoration of higher education at Chandernagore, which resulted in the re-establishment of the “College Dupleix” on July 4, 1931. on July 17,1931 the West Bengal Government granted the college permission to teach I.A and I.Sc. under the University of Calcutta. On June 2,1938 by an order of the Governor of French India, the College received permanent status and was placed under the Education Department and English Honours in 1947 followed by Mathematics Honours in 1948 and Commerce Courses in 1949. Meanwhile, in November 1947, “Chandernagore College” by the Free City Government. Since then the College has been expanding in all directions. After the merger of the Free City with the Indian Union on June 9, 1952, the College came under the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. In 1954, when the city was merged with West Bengal, Chandernagore College was taken over by the Government of West Bengal. This is the beginning of the present chapter in the history of the College. This year the College is going to celebrate its Platinum Jubilee commencing on from July 4, 2006 (Counted from the date of its re-establishment.) Since 1960, the College aggilated to Burdwan University. It offers Honours and General courses in various subjects of Arts, science and Commerce Post graduate course in Geography has been introduced in this College in the session 2001-2002. some new curses like Computer Science at the U.G level, P.G courses in Botany and Bengali may be introduced soon. The academic achievements of the students of this college has been consistently brilliant. The College is proud of its innumerable Alumni who were university toppers and are, at present, highly placed in various Research and Academic Institutions both in India and abroad. Besides conventional system of education, Chandernagore College study centre under Netaji Subhas Open University provides distance education in a number of subject in Arts, Science and Commerce stream. |
