Islampur College came into existence on the 4th of December 1973 in a backward region with the assistance of some local people interested in making education accessible to the marginalized and the underprivileged ones of the area. At that initial stage, the college could only offer courses in the Arts stream. But over the past forty-five years it has flourished enough to introduce courses from both the Science and the Commerce streams. At present, Islampur College offers its students to study honours courses in nine different subjects.
The College has Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) study centre to provide opportunity of higher education in open and distance mode to students who are unable to continue their regular studies. Our students also take part in different social activities through programs organized by the NSS and NCC units of the college.
A fully computerized system including a computerized library network, a wifi campus, and hassle-free online admission procedure has been implemented in the college to facilitate smooth and speedy official and academic work.
Our another achievement is the establishment of Minority Girls’ Hostel with the financial assistance from the Government of West Bengal where female students coming from remote places can find suitable accommodation.
To cater to the growing academic needs of our highly qualified faculty members and that of the students, the college has developed a well-equipped library with more than 12.000 holdings. In addition, we also have a journal section and an adjoining reading room. Though at present we are facing acute shortage of manpower and financial assistance, we, as always, are trying to overcome these hurdles through our dedication and innovative approaches.
