Debra Thana Sahid Kshudiram Smriti Mahavidyalaya was established by DEEDS, a registered voluntary organization. The Society held a mammoth education convention on 4th September, 2005 in which people from various walks of life enthusiastically took part Prof. Dipak Sarkar, an eminent educationist and social activist, addressed the distinguished gathering and solidly stood by the popular demand for a College. He was magnanimous enough to respond to the invitation of the society and lay the foundation stone on 17th November, 2005. The members of the Society with the support of Prof. Dipak Sarkar and the patronage of the Panchayat and the Local Administration left no stone unturned to collect resources from general individuals and establishments. The work for building up essential infrastructure is still going on.
Debra block was located almost in the heart of the undivided district of Medinipur. It was then the fourthmost populated area. Now a part of the Block borders on the district of Purba Medinipur. The communication network has also been very strong. Not only S.E. Railway line but also the National Highway no. 6 have crossed through the Block, besides the P.W.D. pucca road. Because of better amenities people of neighboring Blocks like Pingla, Sabang & Mayna have gathered and settled here. Though the main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture and allied work, in course of time many have turned to industry, business and service. In keeping with their rising needs, hopes and aspirations, Primary Secondary and Higher Secondary education expanded. But establishment of a college remained remote reality. Right from late 1950s sporadic attempts been made but to no effect. Meanwhile, the surrounding blocks have seen the blossoming of new colleges. In 1972, some land was made available at Gangaramchak mouza in the form of donation. On 4th May, 1975 a big education convention was held which toyed with various alternatives like polytechnic, General degree college, Agriculture institution and junior Basic Training College. The outcome was inconclusive. With the introduction of 10+2+3 pattern in 1976 and independent non-integrated H.S. Institution named as Debra Uchchatara Madhyamik Vidyalaya (Known as Auribindo College in the locality) was set up as stepping stone to higher education. Subsequently. It was resolved that the said institution will be upgraded into a degree college but no headway could be made. In early 1990s, a fresh initiative was undertaken but it did not crystallize. Mean while, H.S. sections were disintegrated form colleges. Therefore setting up of a degree college as a separate entity became a bare necessity. Against this backdrop, persons interested in education sat together and decided to form Debra Education and Development Society in 2005. The Society immediately plunged into action. It is exhilarating to note that the Society’s endeavour has borne fruit. The college got affiliation with Vidyasagar University in 2006 with due approval from the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal.
